Have your say on the proposed changes to the River Murray Private Carryover Policy and its operation in South Australia
What’s being decided?
After the River Murray Private Carryover Policy was implemented in the 2019-20 water use year, stakeholders' feedback suggested that the policy could be improved to ensure its effective operation.
The South Australian Murray-Darling Basin Natural Resources Management Board has taken this feedback on board and is proposing a number of changes outlined in the Draft Water Allocation Plan for the River Murray Prescribed Watercourse.
A number of resources are available to help you better understand the proposed changes to the water allocation plan and what they might mean for you:
- Private carryover – issues and options
- Private Carryover and Basin Plan Compliance
- Alternatives to South Australian Private Carryover

How can your input influence the decision?
Your input will help inform the final Private Carryover Policy to be included in the Water Allocation Plan.
All community feedback will be considered when finalising the Water Allocation Plan, before it is submitted to the Minister for Environment and Water for adoption.
Written responses will be provided to submissions after a decision has been made by the Board and the Minister for Environment and Water.
What are the next steps?
Any changes, if supported by the community, will be implemented by the start of 2020-21 water use year.
