Why do we need these laws?
The Freedom of Information Act exists to provide public access to official documents and records; to provide for the correction of public documents and records in appropriate cases; and for other purposes.
Freedom of Information requests are an important part of the democratic process - they help the government to be open and transparent, as well as help inform your understanding of government.
You have a legal right to:
- seek access to documents from a state government agency, local council or university
- request amendments to documents relating to you that are incomplete, incorrect, out-of-date or misleading.
The Freedom of Information Act 1991 hasn't had significant changes made for many years, and it's critical for our laws to be contemporary and relevant.
These changes will strengthen the public's right to know, while also making sure agencies can better deliver on their requirements.
